Dear colleagues, students and alumni,

I and our entire community of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) are deeply saddened by the devastating No. 5 alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones, both residents and the brave firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In response to the incident, EdUHK immediately activated its emergency response mechanism last night. Through the concerted efforts of our colleagues and various parties, we have reached out to staff members and students residing in Wang Fuk Court to ensure their safety and provide them with all necessary assistance. A cross-departmental taskforce has been set up and developed a series of emergency measures, including direct hotlines for affected students and staff, online classes, remote work arrangement, and counselling services to offer comprehensive support.

Support Hotlines:

Student Affairs Office Support Hotline: 2948 6893 / 2948 6404

WhatsApp Support: 2948 6244 / 9260 5536

24-hour Counselling Hotline: 8208 1155

Counselling Services (Office Hours): 2948 6245

As an institution deeply rooted in Tai Po and connected with Hong Kong SAR, EdUHK always stands firmly with the community. We are actively coordinating efforts among faculty, experts, school teachers, alumni, and community networks to establish a ‘Temporary Support Centre’ at our Tai Po campus. Leveraging our campus facilities and expertise in education, teacher training, and knowledge-sharing, we strive to provide affected families and students in Tai Po with temporary learning spaces, academic support, and psychological care during this difficult time. Further details will be announced in due course.

On behalf of the EdUHK community, I once again express our deepest sympathies to the affected residents and our utmost respect to the frontline rescuers who have been working tirelessly. By upholding the spirit of ‘Education-centred, Caring-hearted’, we stand united and will work hand in hand to overcome this challenge together.

Wishing everyone safety and peace of mind.

Yours sincerely,

Professor John Lee Chi-Kin
