Vivienne Leung joined the Institute in 1996. She has coordinated the program of Pre-service CE (ECE) and the B.Ed ECE (Hons) Part time programs for many years. Her research has been related to the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in learning and teaching, specifically in preschool settings. Additionally, she has researched the use of portfolio assessment for young children, teachers’ perception in using portfolios to promote learning, picturebook and young children, Early STEM/STEAM Education and Global Childhoods.

To understand the needs of kindergarten teachers and the school-based curriculum, the research team will invite them to participate in pre-post surveys and teacher interviews. The survey and the interview can provide insight into the development needs of local schools and the challenges they face in integrating picture books with STEAM learning activities. The project team will support the participating schools to develop their STEAM curriculum based on picture books and the STEAM environment. Additionally, the project team intends to improve the transition from kindergarten to primary school by searching for and recommending STEAM learning resources, such as play-based STEAM kits, simple engineering kits and digital technologies. Early Childhood Education STEM and Maker Education This pilot project aims at promoting age-appropriate and authentic STEM learning experiences in early childhood settings through co-developing 24 sets of STEM teaching packages with early childhood teachers. This project aim at building up children’s STEM awareness, knowledge and skills through STEM-rich maker learning experience. 12 pilot project schools will be invited to join this project, including kindergartens and child care centres (both half-day & whole-day service). Children in the project schools are able to learn science and mathematics through the application of technology and engineering in a realistic and integrated learning experience. This project will align with the core education concepts of ECE including observation, awareness and motivation in designing STEM activities. Additionally, fundamental concepts of physical science, life science and earth science will be included in the content of teaching packages.Early childhood professionals have an essential role in supporting young children’s motivation and engagement in STEM education. The co-development process with early childhood teachers provides practical professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills of designing quality STEM learning activities. Additionally, teachers’ needs, difficulties and challenges in applying STEM teaching packages will be examined. Teachers will participate in pre and post-project interviews before and after the training and implementation stage to reflect on their pedagogical needs, school-level conditions, challenges in implementing STEM activities at schools. Global Childhoods: Lifeworlds and Educational Success in Australia and Asia This project investigates how everyday lifeworlds of Year 4 (9-10 year of age) students in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore shape children’s orientations to educational success. Situated in the global cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore, the study explores connections between policy contexts, school experiences and everyday activities of children growing up in the Asian Century. Findings will advance knowledge of factors that contribute to children’s understandings of how their experiences in and out of school prepare them for futures in a global world. This will enable policy-makers, educators and parents to provide improved learning opportunities in children’s lives. The Blended & Online Learning & Teaching (BOLT) Project: Collaborative professional development for capacity building in blended and online learning and teaching in Hong Kong Professional development for tertiary teaching in Hong Kong is conducted in many different ways. Each institute of higher education has its own approaches, provisions and requirements, and varied resources to address this issue. In most of Hong Kong’s universities resources for supporting professional development for teachers on blended and online learning are limited and ad hoc in approach, with funding for such work competing against many other priorities. To address the apparent gap in consistent professional development provision in relation to online and blended learning and teaching, this project proposes a common foundation course open to all collaborating partners, and a range of other activities through which collaborating partners will build-on and share resources in different ways. By taking a coherent and coordinated approach to address a complex educational challenge, the project benefits staff and students of all collaborating partners. A greater range of activities can be offered than any one institution could provide alone, and all benefit from sharing varied approaches and considering different priorities and contexts. At the same time each partner is able to address their own institutional needs. The overall aim of this project is to provide a graduated professional development support experience across all participating UGC funded institutions to facilitate the development of teachers’ skills in online and blended teaching. Coordinating this effort across institutions and conducting in a blended mode will: a) encourage consistency and quality through good practices and broad evaluation b) add authenticity through offering blended professional development experiences to teachers located in different institutions c) allow the pooling of professional development staff and resources for the benefit of all. The project involves five institutions (PolyU, HKIEd, HKBU, HKU and HKUST) who will work collaboratively towards the overall aim of the project, whilst further developing strategies and initiatives that contextualise and address their own institutional needs. The collaboration between EDC in PolyU and academic staff in the Faculty of Education and Human Development in HKIEd provides a strong foundation for this project. It signifies the importance and synery between professional development activities in elearning, and its direction connection to learning and teaching delivered by academic staff in faculties. PolyU will provide a top-down approach through a formal professional development foundation course while HKIEd will provide a bottom-up approach via the formation of learning communities within academic faculties. Combining both these perspectives within one overall project provides valuable benefits and greater impact to advance blended learning within the sector. Empower early childhood educators’ multimodal learning experience This project facilitated early childhood teachers to share exemplars of pedagogical design and the experience of ICT innovation in the preschool settings. The outcomes of this project included an interactive e-platform, which created and shared multiple ICT-related practice experience for local practitioners. In addition, the e-platform took active role to improve learner’s ICT skills and knowledge, and share multiple media resources. A Pilot Study - An Exploration of Children's Learning in Home in 21st Century. In the last project titled: ‘An investigation of the environment and the teaching practice of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in preprimary education in Hong Kong, findings revealed that there were differences in learning experiences and teaching practice with ICT between profit and non-profit making preschools and also between kindergartens in different regions in Hong Kong. The research results of Alliance of Childhood (2004) on computer access and use revealed that children’s growth, development and learning are intimately linked with the use of new technologies in their home and school context. Thus, it is regarded as being important to study this phenomena in more depth This study follows the findings of the last project to explore the home learning environment of young children using ICT and the impact of parental involvement in these activities. Findings and recommendations will be made available to parents and early childhood teachers to help them to identify that different childhood experiences are in place and it may be necessary to observe young children so that we are able to reconceptualise their playful learning in 21st century. Creating a Community of Practice with ICT: An Internet Based Initiative The project aims to develop a website to demonstrate exemplary cases of integrated curriculum and exemplify the use of ICT in teaching and learning in preschools. The website will demonstrate the ways in which students can become active learners. Enhance Young Children's Development and Learning through Children's Portfolio It is believed that the standardize tests and examinations traditionally used in accessing young children's performances in kindergartens could not fairly reflect the children's developmental characteristics and uniqueness. The Education and Manpower Bureau now starts to advocate kindergartens to use continuous based assessment systems for their young children. The one year project "Enhance Young Children's Development and Learning through Children Portfolio" funded by the Quality Education Fund which involved three kindergartens aims to develop such system. The goal of the project is (i) to effectively enhance the children's personal development and learning; (ii) to effectively promote the teachers' learning and teaching; and (iii) to help parents effectively elevate their children's development and learning. Using Multi-model Teaching and Learning Experiences to Enhance Early Childhood Education The goal of this project is to promote effective teaching and learning through the use of a multi-modal approach (i.e. mix of face-to-face and E-learning strategies) in the department of ECE. This project will create a set of exemplary modules that utilize online and face-to face teaching in order to promote more effective learning for students.
