Personal Profile

Dr Derwin Chan is a health psychologist with diverse research interests in the areas of health promotion, sport and exercise science, and behavioural medicine. He is an Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education at Education University of Hong Kong. Derwin is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow with the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Scientist with British Science Council, and a registered consultant of occupational safety and health. He has over 100 publications of peer-review articles or book chapters related to the psychology of health, sport and exercise, and medical treatment. Derwin’s research primarily focuses on psychosocial, motivational, and social cognitive processes underpinning individuals’ health behaviours, including (but not exclusive to) sport and exercise, treatment adherence, and the prevention of injury (e.g., domestic injury), deficiency (e.g., myopia), diseases (e.g., influenza, COVID-19), and illegal substance-use (e.g., doping in sport). Derwin examines the relative influence of significant others (e.g., teachers, parents, teammates, physicians, and physiotherapists) on the promotion of health behaviours, and he develops evidence-based digital health interventions (e.g., eHealth, mHealth systems) to facilitate health behaviour change in school, and other health settings. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Stress and Health, Advisory Editor of Social Science & Medicine, Executive Editor of Health Psychology Bulletin, and editorial board member of six other scholarly journals.

Dietary and Safety Behaviors of Young Children: A Cross-Cultural Study
The objective of this project is to investigate the well-being of young children in different countries by analyzing their dietary and injury patterns. The research will focus on children's eating habits, injury incidence, and the measures parents take to protect their children from domestic injuries. The study will use theoretical models of behavior and motivation to better understand why parents make certain choices. Additionally, the project will examine a survey about swimming skills and drowning prevention patterns of young children.

Early Advancement in Social-emotional Health and Positivity (EASP)
Research into positive education has shed lights into understanding the psychological and social factors associated with individuals’ optimal functioning, psychological well-being, and social-emotional competence (Cheung, Leung, Chung, & Cheung, 2018; Kwong et al., 2018; Li & Lau, 2019). Social-emotional competence refers to skills that help individuals manage their own emotions, understand the feelings and perspectives of others, and interact with others in positive ways. These skills are important as they build the foundation for formal learning in schools, ranging from kindergartens to universities. However, relatively little research attention has been placed on understanding how positive education could improve the way teachers and parents can optimise pre-school children’s social emotional development. This project will draw on the PROSPER framework which stands for Positivity, Relationships, Outcomes, Strengths, Purpose, Engagement, and Resilience (Ambler, Anstey, McCall, & White (2017). This framework includes model of wellbeing and achievement (Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, Strengths and Resilience). Under this framework, we will examine whether the 2x2 model of perceived social influence (Chan et al., 2019) will promote individual wellbeing into teacher education and further empower positive learning environment at preschool and home.
