Personal Profile

Pan Hang Tang, PhD, is a Lecturer I in the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts at The Education University of Hong Kong. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Deakin University, where he explored how technology can assist in developing children’s musical creativity.With extensive teaching experience at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, Tang has developed and taught various music curricula for different institutions. These include the Tuen Mun District Secondary Schools DSE Music Scheme, an Arts co-curricular workshop at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a summer gifted program on musical creativity at the University of Hong Kong, and the Centralized Scheme of Music Training for Senior Secondary Students organized by the Education Bureau.


In addition to his teaching roles, Tang is an active composer. He initiated the Hong Kong Composers’ Guide to run a 3-year project, the School Concert Series. His compositions have been commissioned and published by the Sacred Music Commission of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese, such as La Messa Cinese, performed by the Diocesan Choir in 2014.


Tang’s research focuses on the flexible-learning approach, policy and curriculum design, and Catholic religious music. He has presented his research findings at various conferences, such as the International Society for Music Education World Conference and the Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research. Tang’s current research project includes investigating the effectiveness of the flexible-learning approach in cultivating students’ interests in learning music history. He has also been involved in several research projects, including a long-term collaboration with researchers from Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan, which aims to compare education policies in each region. In addition, Tang is a Commissioner for the ISME Policy Commission, a Committee on Music Curriculum Development Council member, and a Secondary Music Textbook Review Panel member for the Education Bureau, HKSAR. He also serves as an examiner for IB Music and a composer for the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. Additionally, he has served as a Curriculum Supervisor for YCH Tung Chi Ying Memorial Secondary School and as a School Manager for Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Primary School.


With his passion and dedication to music education, as well as his extensive experience in teaching, research, and composition, Tang is an invaluable asset to the field.

Flexible-learning in Tertiary Music History Education
The flexible-learning approach provides some extent of autonomy for students to determine what to learn. This is highly a learner-centered teaching approach and is deemed to be effective to arouse students’ learning interests. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of using the flexible-learning approach in cultivating students’ interests in learning music history.

The New Era of Music Education: Technology, Creativity, and Policy
Information technology (IT) has been promoted for more effective learning and teaching in the subject of music since the current music curriculum guide was published in 2003. This research aims to find out whether music teachers today still stick to the traditional teaching practices or they have improved their technology skills for adopting the more interactive teaching methods. In addition, the research aims to find out how my model PFMCIT (Tang 2009) may show impact on the participants’ schools.
