Projects

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Financial Education Programme
The Project is created and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, and co-created by The Education University of Hong Kong, The University of Chicago, Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, CoCoon Foundation and Soloman Learning Group. The primary objective of the project is to equip young students with essential financial capabilities, enabling them to achieve long-term financial well-being and personal fulfilment. By instilling financial knowledge, developing the right mindset and motivation, and honing financial decision-making competences, the project cultivates a critical life skill that directly impacts the students' lifelong financial capability. The curriculum design is based on the financial capability framework of the University of Chicago and the Hong Kong financial capability framework developed by the Education University of Hong Kong. Three types of financial education curriculum models will be developed for upper primary students (P4 to P6), including a three-year full version program and a one-year condensed version program. The curriculum will include a comprehensive set of teaching materials, teacher training, and relevant supporting resources. Additionally, it will incorporate experiential learning activities for students, teacher training, and parent learning activities to promote financial education in schools holistically.

Beyond the E-Portfolio: Connectivity and Communities of Learning in a Virtual Environment
With the emphasis of tertiary education shifting beyond the physical boundaries of the university, it is important to have a means for students to feel connected when they are geographically distant and to connect with their disparate learning experiences in order to make meaning of these experiences beyond individual, solitary reflection. The aim of this three-year, cross-disciplinary, cross-institutional project is to stimulate students to form virtual communities of learning supported by a faculty mentor to explore more deeply how their individual learning experiences affect their development as university students and as human beings. To achieve this, we will create a virtual learning environment, or working e-portfolio, that becomes a tool for mobile communication, social learning and collaboration, in which students coalesce into communities of learning motivated by the challenge of an inquiry-based approach. This will serve the dual purpose of enhancing student learning while also providing psychosocial support when they are physically not present in the classroom. The higher education sector as a whole will share the benefits of having a learning framework and an e-learning tool which work synergistically to encourage conversation, build social and electronic connectivity and puts the collective learning power of a community at its core.

Developing a Model for Facilitating Sustainable Teacher Professional Development through Practitioner Research
There has been a call in the education literature for making Practitioner Research (PR) a key characteristic of high quality Teacher Professional Development (TPD) over the last two decades. Although extensive reports can be found on the positive and profound impacts of PR on TPD, there is a lack of research on the development of teachers’ research ability in PR. This study addresses the research gap through investigating 16 Hong Kong Liberal Studies teachers’ development related to both teaching and research through conducting PR on teaching critical thinking in secondary classrooms. Moreover, it looks into the relationship between teacher development and the roles played by the facilitators. Data will be collected through (i) interviews with teachers and facilitators, (ii) observations of lesson workshops, lessons involving teachers’ research, post-lesson discussion, group meetings, individual meetings, and sharing sessions., and (iii) documentary analysis of teachers and facilitators’ logbooks, materials associated with the observed lessons (including lesson plans, worksheets, quiz, and reading materials), notes of meetings, emails between teachers and facilitators, as well as teachers’ research plans and reports. A model of facilitating sustainable teacher professional development through PR will be generated by synthesizing the findings and reflections of teachers, facilitators and researchers.

An Empirical Study of Students' Social Interactions in Participating in Enterprise Education
The current focus of the literature of enterprise education has been concentrated upon experiential learning, with little attention on the social interaction within the learning process. Therefore, an empirical study involving both quantitative and qualitative methods was conducted to understand the social interaction in enterprise education from different perspectives. The sample was drawn from the participants of the Teen Entrepreneurs Competition hoisted by HKIEd between 2005 and 2006. The findings have provided supportive evidence for the significant roles of social interaction on the formation of the entrepreneurial characteristics. Also, students were found to develop a more realistic picture about entrepreneurship through social interaction.
