Professional Profile

Dr. Shin KATAOKA received his BA in Chinese Studies from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (東京外国語大学), and MSc in Applied Linguistics from University of Edinburgh. Dr. KATAOKA was awarded his PhD in Chinese language & literature from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學) for his doctoral dissertation entitled "The Aspectual Suffix Gan in Cantonese: A Diachronic and Synchronic Study", that examines the historical development paths of the Cantonese progressive marker Gan 緊. Dr. KATAOKA has a wide range of research interests, including Chinese linguistics, history of Cantonese grammar and romanization systems, cross-cultural communication, sociolinguistics, contrastive linguistics, and toponymy of Hong Kong place names. He has taught a number of language and linguistics courses in Japan, UK, and Hong Kong.

Empowering Multilingual and Multicultural Education in the Digital Age

A Study of the Cantonese Bibles by Western Protestant Missionaries in the Late-Qing and Early-Republican Era
This project aims to investigate into the history of Cantonese Bibles during the Late-Qing and Early-Republican Era. It will focus on the motivations of translation, the social background, translators’ background, and the development of Cantonese Bibles over time.

Establishing a Research Cluster in the EdUHK for Promoting Research on Multilingual Acquisition and Multilingual Education

A Research on the Development of Serial Verb Constructions as Manifested in Cantonese Vernacular Narratives Produced in the 19th Century
Some syntactic constructions in concurrent Cantonese existed in different forms in the 19th century. Many of them were found in the form of a series of verbal phrases. Later they came to function as a single predicate. Using the narrative stories written in the informal register of Cantonese in the 19th century, this project aims to explore the developmental paths of these constructions.

An online self-access Cantonese learning platform for Putonghua speakers
Cantonese has been a lingua franca in Hong Kong since the 19th century. In tertiary education, the intake of mainland students has been growing and these students are encouraged to overcome the language barrier by mastering the local vernacular, Cantonese, in order to survive, understand local culture and make friends with local students, which would make their lives much easier. Developing a corpus-based online pronunciation learning system for Cantonese learners of Mandarin and Japanese
Hong Kong is a metropolitan city that serves as an international financial centre, which has given rise to multi-lingual characteristics in recent years. In addition to Cantonese and English which serve mostly as first and second languages, Hong Kong residents have increasingly started to develop a third or even a fourth language. Linguistic Loan from Japanese in Hong Kong Chinese: An Investigation into Cultural Contact and Linguistic Adaptation
Currently Japanese pop culture is very popular in Hong Kong, which has resulted in many Japanese-based words being borrowed phonetically as well as graphically to Hong Kong Chinese. This is a preliminary study of the relationship between the linguistic loan and the cultural contact.

In this project, we plan to develop research agendas in a number of directions: compilation of a multilingual and multimodal English-Mandarin-Cantonese-Japanese parallel corpus for research and pedagogical purposes; development of a parallel concordancing computer program that allows users to search the multilingual parallel corpus and the system will automatically produce parallel concordance examples and other useful corpus statistics; development of an online platform that hosts the multiling . . .
