Personal Profile

-Prof. Eva Lau is Professor and Acting Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the Education University of Hong Kong. She is a researcher in the field of child development and family studies, with a wide range of interests including parental involvement, parenting practices, school readiness, childhood aggression, and executive functions. Her research program focuses on three crucial areas: 1) the impact of parenting on child development across developmental transitions, 2) the effectiveness of parenting practices and parent-child programs in enhancing children's executive functions and school readiness, and 3) well-being and parenting during the transition to parenthood. She was named World's Top 2% Scientist by Stanford University in 2024 (Developmental and Child Psychology).

-Prof. Lau has published in reputable journals such as Child Development, Parenting, Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Early Education and Development, and British Educational Research Journal. She is a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, American Psychological Association, American Educational Research Association. She has successfully secured four competitive research grants from the Research Grant Council to support her research endeavors. In addition, she has received substantial donations, totaling over 110 million Hong Kong dollars, for projects specifically related to early education and development.

-Prof. Lau is a speaker for over 150 teacher training workshops and parent education programs, collaborating with local and overseas universities, schools, and the Education Bureau of Hong Kong. She frequently provides insights on parenting and school transition topics through interviews with television, radio, newspaper, and magazine outlets. Her research findings and projects have been covered by local and international media on more than 150 occasions. Prof. Lau is also the author of a children's book on school transition and has served as a consultant for two community programs on parenting and school transition. In 2022/23, the school transition team led by Prof. Lau was awarded the President's Award for Knowledge Transfer from her university for their exceptional efforts in promoting children's school transition during the pandemic.

-Prof. Lau currently serves as an associate editor for Early Education and Development, Guest Editor for Developmental Psychology, and an editorial member for the Parenting, Journal of Research in Childhood Education, and AI, Brian and Child. Throughout her career, she has supervised four Ph.D., three Ed.D, and eight M.A. students as their principal supervisor. In addition to serving as a thesis examiner and grant reviewer for both local and overseas universities, she has also been a program external examiner and advisor for local tertiary institutions. She is a specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications and a school manager for four local kindergartens.

-As the loving mother of two children, Prof. Lau recognizes the uniqueness of each child and family, and believes that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to parenting. She takes pleasure in supporting parents by sharing her research knowledge and her own experiences as a parent.

A Longitudinal Study of Parental Involvement and Children's School Adjustment During the Transition to School
This pilot study will examine the relationships between parental involvement and school adjustment.Stratified random sampling will be used to recruit one kindergarten in each of the three strata developed based on the median monthly household income of the districts. Within each of the three kindergartens, one upper kindergarten (K3) class with children aged five to six years will be randomly selected. Approximately 80 children and their parents as
well as their lead class teachers will complete a series of tasks. The
parents as well as the kindergarten lead class teachers will report on parental involvement. The teachers will also rate the children’s
school adjustment. The child interview will be conducted to assess
parents’ involvement and children’s school adjustment. The investigation of the proposed model will extend the principal investigator's previous work on parental involvement and contribute to the theoretical understanding of the complex associations between parental involvement and
school adjustment. The findings will also lay the foundation upon which further support can be built in both the local and international communities to facilitate parental involvement from the early education years.

Parental Involvement in Early Childhood Education and Children’s Readiness for School
The present study explored the pattern of parental involvement as well as the
relationship between parental involvement and children’s readiness for school in
the Chinese context. It attempted to move beyond teacher reports to focus
primarily on parents’ reports of their involvement both at home and in school. It
utilised a parent rating that was developed to capture the distinct multidimensional
nature of Chinese parental involvement in early childhood education. Both
parents’ reports of their children’s readiness for school and child tests were
employed to establish the triangulation of assessment.

Dean’s Research Awards 2024/25
The Award Selection Panel applied the RAE criteria of originality, rigour, and significance to assess the nominations. Dr Eva Lau’s research article, “Examining the effectiveness of a video-based parent-child program on executive functions for children 5 to 6 years old,” demonstrates promising strategies for early childhood development. “This research provides valuable insights into how targeted, accessible interventions can support the cognitive development of children during critical early years, with potential long-term benefits,” shared Dr Lau.
