Development of Game-basis Learning Materials for Children to Promote Healthy Eating and Hand Hygiene Healthy eating is important to our health. Children need to learn the knowledge about food categories and food portions before they could understand how to choose healthy food items. Through playing the board game, children will find it interesting to design their meals by picking healthy food items. The board games also let them know the requirement for eating varieties of food items as children may limit their food choices to a few. The board games will be an innovative strategy for learning healthy eating. The board game could be used as party activities in a home setting. By integrating technology, the boardgames could equip more information about food such as energy and nutrient values. This benefits the teachers to use the boardgames as teaching materials in lessons. Hand hygiene is important to our daily life particularly during this COVID-19 pandemic period, it is necessary to become a habit of young children. Through the boardgames, the knowledge and skills can be applied to the players’ daily activities This benefits the parents and teachers to use this boardgame as teaching materials for educating the children’s knowledge, skills, and attitude in home and school settings. Vaccination Attitudes of Older Chinese Adults after Participation in Social Media? Older adults who are not inclined to get vaccination may become more resistant to do so after participation in social media. Using a randomized controlled design, we aim to test whether training in critical thinking can reduce negative attitudes toward vaccination, as well as incidence of seasonal influenza and pneumonia, following participation in social media by unvaccinated older adults in Hong Kong. Efficacy of Behavioral Change in Decisions on Antibiotic Use in Relation of Childhood Infection: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial The overuse or misuse of antibiotics may cause several harmful effects at both the individual, and the community. The situation of parents who self-medicate is an important issue. Changing the behaviour and attitudes of and empowering individuals in the future generation of adults is necessary. This means empowerment of parents through participatory education to help parents’ access, understand and use health information for the benefit of their children health and wellbeing. Adding Health to Longevity: Building a Health Literate Hong Kong Hong Kong is one of the places that people enjoy longest longevities, yet, are we healthier? Recent government statistics on non-communicable diseases and wellbeing survey may provide contradictory evidence. Health literacy refers to an individual’s capacity (knowledge, motivation and competences) to access, understand, appraise and apply health information in order to make informed decision and actions in everyday life regarding health care, disease prevention and health promotion towards health and wellbeing during the life course. Health literacy, a public health issue which is closely related to non-communicable diseases, is receiving imminent global attention. There is an increasing trend of non-communicable disease (NCD) (e.g. cancer, heart disease and stroke) worldwide which accounts for more than 75% of deaths. NCD is closely related to modifiable risk factors, e.g. lack of physical activity, body mass index, poor dietary habits, smoking, alcohol use and other life style related behaviour while health literacy is documented to be an important determinant in preventing NCD. Both international and national data show low healthy literacy among their people. Hong Kong does not have any structured data in this regard, yet NCD prevalence is comparable if not higher than theirs. Low health literacy poses a challenge to general public in terms of individual health, population health and escalating healthcare costs, which warrants immediate attention. Low penetration and low engagement are the foremost significant barriers to enhancement of health literacy. To this end, the proposed strategic research area aims at raising the health literacy of people in Hong Kong through an innovative development of a Mobile Health (mHealth) system and decentralized implementation of effective data driven measures to tackle NCD. Bronze Medal Our project develops 3 boardgames specifically associated with the knowledge and skills missing between teaching and learning. For example, the boardgame “Supermarket Rush” focus on teaching the children using the ingredients design their own healthy lunchboxes based on the ratio of whole grains, vegetables, meat in 3:2:1 principle. This is not common in current teaching materials. The boardgame “Food Pyramid” reinforces children’s concept in healthy food groups and good groups, though healthy in their origins but, could be unhealthy if they are in high salt, sugar and fat. Also, the concept of balanced diet is included to the game rule. The boardgame “Germ Fighter” transfers the idea that there are germs everywhere but we can do preventive strategies to fight against the sicknesses caused by bacterial or viral infection. The boardgame helps the student understand it is easy to get contaminated of germs, but we can protect ourselves with a few effective coping strategies Date of receipt: 26/8/2023, Conferred by: 8th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2023) |
