Personal Profile

Dr. Eileen Lam received her PhD in Chinese art history from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her doctoral research focused on a lavish group of jades discovered in princely tombs of the second century BC in southeastern China. Prior to joining the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, she was awarded the J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Art Institute of Chicago, USA. She lectures courses in the fields of material culture, and history of Chinese art. Her current research focuses on tomb art and the materiality of objects in ancient China. She recently has carried out research projects and published on ritual object and its representations of Han China.

Projects
Power of Texts: Inscriptions on Ritual Objects of the Han Period (206 BCE−220 CE)
The project aims to look into the under-researched aspect of the changes of function of texts on ritual objects during the Han times. A survey of archaeological reports, collections and archives in different museums and institutes will develop a database of the relevant objects and text records to lay a foundation for the study. In addition, this research will study the content and the way the texts are displayed on different types of ritual object of the Han period. It will also investigate the provenance of the texts by comparing them with different common textual materials of the same period.

A Reappraisal of Ancient Glass in the Han period (206 BCE-220 CE)
This research will explore the subject of glass in "Chinese form", which is generally agreed was locally manufactured. A rigorous re-examination of the information will bring the glass pieces that have been disregarded and excluded in previous studies into the research. By relying on archaeological material and reports of scientific analyses, and adopting the interdisciplinary approach of art historical stylistic analyses and contextual material studies, this research will review the importance of glass in Han burial ritual context.

Beyond Imitation: Ritual Objects, Pictorial Representations and Religious Beliefs of Han China
This will be an in-depth research with emphasis on the phenomenon of imitation, exploring the intricate incentives for the practice and selection of material, which will reveal the embedded cultural and social values in the materials and objects per se. More broadly, this research will demonstrate the importance of studying material culture as a way to enhance our understanding of the religious ideologies as well as Han society.

Glass Burial Suit and its Significance in Han China
Most publications about early Chinese glass have explored issues of origin and studied this medium primarily as a reflection of China’s contacts with outside civilizations. This project attempts to focus on the very different subject of the glass burial objects which undoubtedly was locally manufactured. In addition to subjects of date, distribution, and patronage, this project will investigate the importance of glass burial objects in Han burial rituals. Together, these issues may illuminate the role of glass in contemporary perceptions of immortality.
