Personal Profile

Dr. Poon Kin Keung obtained his BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematical Science from the Hong Kong Baptist University, and his PhD degree in Mathematics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He also obtained a PGDE  from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. 

Dr. Poon has received numerous honors during his study and career, including a Certificate of Merit in the QEF Outstanding Project Award for Problem Solving Among Teachers and Pupils in Primary Mathematics (with C.K. Leung, Y.K. Man and Louisa Lam). He was also awarded a Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship, an Elkhorn Enterprises Limited Scholarship, a Two/Ten Charity Trust Scholarship, a Hong Kong Youth Scholarship as well as received Honorable Mention in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Dr. Poon is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology at the Education University of Hong Kong. His research interests cover topics in problem solving in primary and secondary mathematics, technology in mathematics education, complex dynamics and discrete mathematics. He is currently an editor of the Far East Journal of Mathematical Education http://www.pphmj.com/journals/fjme.htm.

Developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “E-pedagogy in Mathematics Learning and Teaching”
This project aims to develop a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) as an exemplar of professional development for all academic and teaching staff at EdUHK/HKIEd. To meet the need for enriching primary and secondary teachers’ professional development related to e-learning in Hong Kong, a MOOC “E-pedagogy in Mathematics Learning and Teaching” is developed as a signature course of EdUHK/HKIEd to equip the academic and teaching staff at EdUHK/HKIEd, as well as pre- and in-service mathematics teachers with the ability and competence in developing e-pedagogy for learner-centered learning. E-pedagogy course packs which include topics on five dimensions in primary mathematics and three dimensions in secondary mathematics will be developed. A Putonghua language version is provided alongside the Cantonese version in the course resources such as videos. After the digital resources are developed in each stage, academic and teaching staff at EdUHK/HKIEd will be invited to trial and evaluate the MOOC.

TDG Project: Teaching and learning portfolios for active, engaged and reflective learning
This project aims to: (a) design and develop e-portfolios via the Mahara environment to enhance active, engaged and reflective learning; (b) select, design and develop suitable learning and teaching materials for incorporation in the e-portfolios; (c) enable the students to aware the rationales and the advantages of adoption of teaching and learning portfolios in education; and (d) enhance the quality of learning and teaching of mathematics and information technology courses.

Developing Exploratory Pedagogy to Enhance Teaching and Learning of Mathematics
This project aims to: (a) develop exploratory pedagogy for enhancing teaching and learning of mathematics; (b) design and develop relevant exploratory teaching and learning materials for use by lecturers and students; (c) study the impact of the end-products via peer-reviews, try-outs, questionnaires and interviews.

A Preliminary Study on the Difficulties of the Junior Secondary Students in Learning Algebra
The purpose of the study reported herein was to identify the common mistakes made by junior secondary students in Hong Kong when learning algebra and to compare teachers’ perceptions of students’ ability with the results of an algebra test. An algebra test was developed and administered to a sample of students (aged between 13 and 14). From the responses of the participating students (N = 815), it was found that students in schools with a higher level of academic achievement had better algebra test results than did those in schools with a lower level of such achievement. Moreover, it was found that a teacher’s perception of a student’s ability has a correlation with that student’s level of achievement. Based on this finding, an instrument that measures teaching effectiveness is discussed. Last but not least, typical errors in algebra are identified, and some ideas for an instructional design based on these findings are discussed. The results were published in the journal:

Further Development of Complete Teaching and Learning Materials for Mathematics Modules
The Department of Mathematics has noted that students have frequently expressed their concern about the difficulty of learning mathematics, and about the shortage of appropriate learning materials. These concerns have validity because of the differences in focus, depth and orientation between the standard university mathematics curriculum and a curriculum that would be appropriate for the education of primary/junior secondary mathematics teachers. Because of these differences, and the much smaller market for the latter, there is a serious lack of learning resources that would meet the needs of our students.For these reasons, mathematics teaching and learning resources have to be developed on a systematic basis, by combining the efforts of various colleagues teaching the modules, and to organise them into complete and coherent teaching and learning resources. These materials will facilitate student learning, provide bases for further studies, and will enhance students' learning of mathematics at the Institute.
