Awe and creativity: An experimental study of the effect of awe on divergent thinking
Creativity is essential in today’s rapidly evolving world, driving innovation and helping solve complex problems. While research shows that positive emotions can boost creativity, this project explores a specific and underexamined emotion: awe—the profound feeling of wonder we experience when faced with something vast or extraordinary, like a stunning landscape or a groundbreaking idea. This research aims to examine the causal impact of awe on creativity and identify the psychological processes involved. Unlike joy (a mostly studied positive emotion), awe often makes us feel small and connected to something greater, prompting us to expand our thinking and question what we know—an ideal mindset for creativity.

Through a series of four studies, we will examine awe’s impact on a core aspect of creativity, namely divergent thinking. Using a between-subjects design, each experiment will include three conditions (n = 30 per condition): awe, neutral, and joy to assess the causal and distinct impact of awe. In Studies 1 and 2, participants will first undergo an emotion manipulation (recall awe experiences or watch awe-inspiring videos), then complete an emotion scale (manipulation check), and lastly, take a creativity measure. In Studies 3 and 4, we will also explore how awe might promote creativity by increasing curiosity and widening attention. As one of the initial projects to systematically examine the causal influence of awe on divergent thinking and its underlying mechanisms, the findings may offer valuable insights for individuals and educators seeking to cultivate creativity.
