Dr Liubov DARZHINOVA is a Research Assistant Professor of the Graduate School at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). She previously held a postdoctoral position in the Department of English Language Education at EdUHK under the Research Grants Council’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme, renamed as the RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme. A Hong Kong PhD Fellowship recipient, Liubov earned her doctorate in applied linguistics from EdUHK. Before moving to Hong Kong, she completed her MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Pannonia (Hungary) through the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, one of the EU’s highly competitive, fully funded programs. She holds a bachelor’s in foreign philology from Kalmyk State University (Russia). Dr Darzhinova's scholarship at the intersection of psycholinguistics and education has deepened theoretical accounts of how syntactic ambiguities are resolved and how bilinguals process language at the word and sentence levels. Her current research explores cognitive and affective dimensions of second/foreign language learning and the impact of technology on youth. Beyond research, Liubov is deeply committed to mentorship and outreach. From 2013 to 2017, she served as the Regional Representative of the School League program in Russia, where she organized initiatives that supported youth through education, career counseling, and early research engagement. At EdUHK, she continues this mission by supervising master’s and doctoral students in applied linguistics and language education.

Social media use and its effects on acculturation of non-local tertiary students in Hong Kong: The interplay of digital literacy, self-identification, and social capital There exists a research gap in understanding of how students, who come to Hong Kong from diverse lingua-cultural backgrounds and geographical locations, negotiate their identities through social media. The empirical data arising from this Start-up Research Project will help provide insights that can advance our understanding of positive and negative aspects of acculturation experienced by non-local students during their stay in Hong Kong and will facilitate the development/enhancement of strategies and targeted support services. A cross-institutional knowledge exchange on student thesis challenges in EFL/ESL contexts This project, initiated by academic and teaching staff from teacher training institutions in Indonesia, Hong Kong, and South Korea, establishes a collaborative platform to investigate thesis supervision in English as a Foreign/Second Language (EFL/ESL) contexts. Designed as a bottom-up initiative, it facilitates knowledge exchange, comparative analysis of supervisory practices, and co-development of strategies to address challenges in student support and supervisory effectiveness. Anchored in student-centered perspectives, the project aims to generate evidence-based recommendations for supervisory training and produce adaptable frameworks for EFL/ESL student thesis supervision, thereby contributing to institutional capacity building and advances cross-regional research collaboration between East and Southeast Asia. Technology-enhanced Reading Assessment of Pre-service English Teachers in Hong Kong: A Scenario-based Approach Traditional assessment of reading typically tests how well students read and understand texts, but it does not always give them opportunities to learn something new in the process of assessment. In the modern age, it is important to create an assessment that not only measures reading abilities but also offers useful information and sets reading goals. The proposed study will thus develop the technology-enhanced scenario-based reading assessment for pre-service English teachers. The study will take the form of action research that is expected to improve the specific educational practice. The study chooses Hong Kong as the key research ground. First, Hong Kong presents a unique case for research because the language is taught and learnt in a place where the language commonly used for everyday interaction is not English. Second, Hong Kong universities with their vibrant and highly internationalized campuses have a positive educational reputation in the world and represent a favourable environment for introducing the proposed assessment. The results of the study are expected to be beneficial to language practitioners and the community of pre-service English teachers alike, but also those who have strong links to digital literacy at all educational levels.
