Projects

Competing Orients: Tourism, Heritage-making, and Informal Political Propaganda in Cold War Asia
This project argues that tourism in Four Asian Tigers (Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Singapore) should be read as a sustained construction of cultural orthodoxy — claims, articulated through heritage sites, museum collections, folk villages, parades, and curated cityscapes, to be the authentic guardians of Eastern tradition. These claims were not framed as anti-socialist; they were framed as cultural and touristic. That is precisely how they did ideological work. A recent intervention by Law, Fong, and Wei (2026) offers the term “informal political propaganda” — state-supported messaging that reaches visitors through aesthetic, experiential, and consumerist channels rather than overt political statement, and that works because tourists do not register it as political. The concept fits the Cold War Asian case but has not been historicized. Based on informal political propaganda, this project extends the analysis to a four-city comparative study built around the question of orthodoxy.

Shared Cultural Origins: Cultural Discourse in Heritage Tourism and Cultural Identity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
This study examines the cultural discourse in heritage tourism and its impact on cultural identity formation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). By analyzing official and semi-official narratives in GBA heritage tourism, the research investigates how the national agenda influences the construction of a shared cultural identity. The case of Nantou Ancient City in Shenzhen is used to illustrate the process of crafting a "shared origins" narrative between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, revealing the underlying motivations behind this narrative construction. The project also explores how contemporary socio-cultural needs and political contexts shape the interpretation and representation of Xin'an County's historical narrative through heritage sites in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Employing a critical heritage studies approach, and drawing upon tourism history and digital humanities perspectives, the study utilizes various primary and secondary sources, including official documents, historical records, field observations, and digital archives. The research aims to contribute to the growing scholarship on heritage, identity, and politics in the GBA while engaging non-academic audiences and enhancing local universities' capacity to critically examine the region's cultural landscapes and its implications. By critically examining how heritage narratives and tourism practices affect the younger generation's cultural identity and sense of belonging in the GBA, the project seeks to provide insights into the complex relationship between heritage, youth, and regional integration in the context of rapid social and political change.
