Personal Profile

Dr Michelle Jia YE (葉嘉) is Assistant Professor at the Department of Chinese Language Studies at the Education University of Hong Kong. She was formerly lecturer at University General Education, assistant professor of Translation, and associate director of CUHK-Chiang Ching-kuo Asia Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Trained in translation studies, she publishes bilingually on transcultural and translingual practice in 19th- and 20th- century Chinese periodical press in reputable venues, including Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Translation Studies, and Journal of Chinese Studies. She authored a monograph (2021) on translation in early Republican Shanghai literary journals, and published Chinese translations of social scientific works. Her work has been supported by Early Career Scheme (ECS), General Research Fund (GRF), and Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) awarded by the Research Grants Council of University Grants Committee, HKSAR. She is completing her second monograph, which traces the emergence of early Chinese cinematic knowledge in Chinese periodical writings circa 1900.


Dr Ye is one of the nine Co-Principal Investigators of the cross-institutional CRF project titled “Lingnan Culture and the World: Construction and Change in the Cultural Landscape of Cantonese Literati from the late Qing to the Republican era in China (1821–1949)” (C4006-22GF). Her ongoing research in the project reconstructs the transpacific cultural enterprise of Cantonese bilinguals in the 19th century from their lexicons and newspapers, engaging pressing themes such as language, trade, wealth, migration, labour, education, and media representation.

Lingnan Culture and the World: Construction and Change in the Cultural Landscape of Cantonese Literati and Merchant Gentry from the mid–Qing to the Republican era in China (1821–1949)
Gathering scholars from across the humanities disciplines, this project examines the construction and evolution of the Lingnan culture as seen in the lives and experiences of 150 key personalities among the Cantonese literati and merchant-gentry of the late Qing and Republican era (1821–1949)—an age of great change in the history of modern China. This project will underline Lingnan’s unique role in the local and global history of culture and knowledge, situating it in the intersections of the Chinese heritage and the incoming cultures from the West and other culturally active parts of the world.

Translation and the Rise of Cinematic Knowledge in Chinese Periodical Press, 1890s-1920s
This project explores the role of translation in the rise of cinematic knowledge in Chinese periodical press in the period 1890s-1920s. By “cinematic knowledge” I refer to forms of understanding ranging from crude facts, raw information, technical expertise to abstract theories of cinema. Current historical studies on early Chinese cinema focus on factual reconstruction of early film screening, production and reception, whereas the intellectual aspect - accumulation and dissemination of initial knowledge about cinema - remains under-studied. To fill this gap, the project surveys translations in periodicals that transmitted cinematic knowledge and outlines the intellectual history of early Chinese cinema. The research idea stems from the assumptions that translation was a pivotal mode of knowledge production at this time and space, and that in China informed discussions about cinema began in newspapers and magazines around 1900, which preceded book-form film scholarship by decades. My inquiry concerns what knowledge about cinema was introduced through translation in periodicals, what circumscribed such happenings, what sources the knowledge possibly came from, and what characterized the translations and translators that transmitted the knowledge. The project adopts analytical frameworks in history of knowledge and translation studies, and engages the use of Chinese periodical databases and network analysis tool(s).The collected translation data undergo several connected analyses. First, I read the translations with concurrent periodical writings to identify relevant knowledge-producing sites (publishers, film studios, etc.) and neighbor knowledge(s) of the cinema (drama, photography, optics and radiography, etc.). Second, I track the sources of translations, compare translations to verified sources to identify textual characteristics, and integrate source-less translations to further describe features in appropriation. Source-less translations – common phenomena back then – are also discussed in connection to the largely anonymous mass of translators to nuance the nature and role of translation. Periodical translators of known identities and high influence are then sampled for focus study to further reveal dynamics between translation, periodical press and the rise in cinematic knowledge. Finally, key translations are contrasted to Chinese film theories up to the 1940s for mapping internal (dis)continuities within Chinese film scholarship. Integrating multi-pronged analyses and exhibiting outcomes in open-access digital repository with a navigable network graph, I demonstrate that in Chinese periodical press in the 1890s-1920s, translation functioned as a dynamic mechanism which on the one hand popularized crowd production of cinematic knowledge and on the other stimulated specialization and theorization of the art and craft of cinema.

Nineteenth–Century Cantonese Literati and Their Changing Attitude towards Chinese and Western Culture Before and After the Opium War: Transformation of the Cultural Landscape of Local Cantonese Elites in the Qing Dynasty
本項目主要以跨學科的合作研究為基礎，綜合文學、歷史、宗教、翻譯、藝術等研究範疇，用具體實例來探討在廣東文化走向興盛的清代，廣東菁英階層在鴉片戰爭前後對西方文化的態度變化，以及他們對中國本土文化的承傳和反思，以至整個廣東文人士紳文化景觀從傳統走向現代的嬗變過程。通過對十九世紀前後期的廣東士人文 化進行比照，展現其融匯中西並引領時代風騷的歷程。

本項目以 19 世紀廣東地區士人的思想、文化等為考察對象，期望通過重要階段的地方歷史揭示出中國歷史的關鍵轉折。融合不同廣東士人對中西文化傾向各異的觀點，探討嶺南文人文化逐漸變換的景觀。同時，將盱衡古今、融匯中西的傑出文人作為重點研究對象，以他們的著作（包括詩詞集、文集、傳記、日記、族譜等）、藝術作品和當時他們接觸到的西方文獻資料等為基礎素材。亦收集來華的旅行者、傳教士、使團成員、商人對廣州的人事、風物進行的記錄，以及外省人來粵地遊玩、經商、為官、謀生等的筆記，例如 John Henry Gray 的 Walks in the City of Canton，夏燮的《粵氛紀事》等，將這些外國人和外省人的記錄與本土文人著作進行對照，從而突出本土文人對中國傳統和西方世界的認知及轉變，為本計劃提供一個更為詳實的背景。

Translation in the New Tide Journal (1919–1922) and the Canonization of May Fourth in the Early Republican Periodical Press
The project examines translation in the journal New Tide (1919-1922) and assesses its role in the canonization of May Fourth. The project explores translation in varied forms, which ranged from “obvious” translations of full or abbreviated texts, to “hidden” translations in fragmentary quotations, summary, citations, or notes. The project traces the sources of translations, compares sources to translations, and examines the usage of translation in the journal. The translation data reveal a process through which a range of foreign sources were appropriated through partial translation in the journal to establish an evolutionist, “new-versus-old” rhetoric, and in which translation had dual effects of criticizing – hence marginalizing – the journal’s concurrent traditional-minded Chinese intellectuals and of validating – hence canonizing – the central ideas of May Fourth, which were integral to what we know as Chinese modernity. These dynamics surrounding New Tide translation are discussed in a series of papers published in international conferences and journals in translation studies, Chinese studies and May Fourth studies, as well as in part of the PI’s monograph. The project has an open dataset (doi:10.6084/m9.figshare.7428434), where readers can navigate the translation data, including a network graph that connects translation in New Tide to their sources.

Mapping the Translators’ Network of the Shanghai Publisher Chung–hua Library (1912–1920s)
The project offers a historical study of Chung-hua Library, a major publisher in early Republican Shanghai. The Library has so far received little attention in existing scholarship, and it is often associated with the traditional literary circles collectively known as the Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies School. The project aims to challenge the “old-fashioned” and somewhat “backward” connotation of this association, with an analysis of the social network of a group of key members of the Library: the translators.
The project first reconstructs the Library’s publishing repertoire and activities, showing that it was an active publisher of translated literature, with its own in-house translation department. It also illustrates that translation was a key element in the Library’s best-selling literary magazines, including The Pastime (1913-1915), Woman’s World (1914-1915), The Glamour (1914-1915) and The Saturday (1914-1916; 1921-1923). Proceeding from these observations, and based on the bibliographical records of the Library and the contents of these magazines, the project compiles indexes of the translators, contributors, editors, periodicals and institutions associated with the Library. The indexes are then processed in data visualization tools such as Gephi to map the social network radiating from the translators. The mapping is expected to reveal complex connections of the translators with literary societies, educators, industrial entrepreneurs, government officials and women’s right activists in early Republican Shanghai. Incorporating textual analysis of their translations, the project defines translators in Chung-hua Library as social connectors of modernizers in early Republican China, and reinterprets the position of the Library in this historical period.
