Biography

Dr Johan Ng’s research investigates motivational processes in exercise and sport and their links to physical and psychological health. He also specialises in measurement and analytics of movement behaviours, including a focus on AI-assisted assessment (e.g., fundamental movement skills in childhood) and wearable-based sleep and activity detection.

 

Dr Ng is actively serving the academic and local community. Currently, he is a Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Physical Activity in Health, and an Editorial Board Member of International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. He was also a recipient of the “JSEP Excellence in Reviewing Award”, a reward given to active reviewers to acknowledge their review work for the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology. Dr Ng is also a Expert Panel member for the InspiringHK Dream Factory, a project dedicated to provide grassroot basketball training to local kindergarten and primary school students.

Projects

Examining the accuracy of accelerometer-based sleep detection algorithms for young children and how sleep metrics impact daily fluctuations in cognitive functions
The study has three main objectives. First, it evaluates the reliability and validity of different accelerometer sleep-detection approaches in children aged 4–8 years by comparing wrist- and hip-worn devices, as well as count-based and raw acceleration algorithms, against electroencephalogram (EEG) measures as the gold standard. Second, it explores how 24-hour movement behaviours—comprising sleep, sedentary time, and physical activity—affect daily fluctuations in children’s cognitive performance. Third, it examines whether existing algorithms can accurately detect daytime naps, which are often overlooked despite being part of recommended sleep duration. The study is motivated by the need for accurate measurement of children’s movement behaviours, which are crucial for healthy development. While accelerometers are widely used, inconsistencies in algorithms and device placement, along with limited validation for sleep detection in children, may affect data reliability. A sample of children aged 4–8 will participate in a five-day home-based data collection protocol. Participants will wear accelerometers on both the wrist and hip continuously and use a consumer-grade EEG device during sleep. Cognitive function will be assessed using an iPad-based tool (CANTAB), and parents will report children’s emotional well-being and sleep-related information, including nap occurrences. Sleep metrics (e.g., total sleep time, sleep efficiency), physical activity levels, and sedentary time will be derived from the devices using multiple algorithms. Statistical analyses, including equivalence testing and mixed models, will compare measurement methods and examine relationships between movement behaviours and cognitive performance. Overall, this study aims to improve the accuracy of sleep measurement in children and provide insights into how daily movement patterns influence cognitive functioning, supporting evidence-based health guidelines for early childhood.
