Enhancing Students’ Learning through Systematic and Effective Self-reflection To maximum the learning of students, students need the skills to organize and integrate the extensive knowledge and learning experiences and generate meaningful principles. Reflection plays an essential role in this process. This project aims to (1) promote effective reflection skills in students, so that they can become more self-regulated and self-competent in their learning; (2) enhance self-awareness of students through guided reflective exercises, and (3) produce a reflection logbook which can guide students to conduct systematic and purposeful reflection throughout the course of their learning. The Examination of a Workshop Intervention to Promote Hong Kong Preservice Teachers’ Psychological Well-being The collaborative project (CAD210,000) was granted by WYNG Foundation to principal investigators Prof. Nancy Heath from McGill University, Canada, and Dr. Arita Chan (Department of Psychology) and Dr. Hui Wang (Department of Special Education and Counselling) from EdUHK. This three-year project is entitled “Enhancing Hong Kong Pre-service Teachers' Mental Health and Well-Being: Adaptation and Evaluation of the RESST Program”. The project aims to provide pre-service teachers with evidence-based strategies for enhancing their psychological well-being and resilience as well as effective skills in supporting the well-being and positive development of their students. The project will have three phases: (1) need assessments and control group study to understand the mental health of pre-service teachers, (2) the development of the Hong Kong version of Regulating Emotions and Stress in Pre-Service Teachers (HK-RESST) program by adapting the McGill University’s Regulating Emotions and Stress in pre-Service Teachers (RESST) program and a pilot evaluation of the HK-RESST to inform program revisions, and (3) evaluation of the revised HK-RESST program and dissemination of the findings. Enhancing Students’ Well-being and Life Values: Perspectives of Life Education and Positive Education This Community of Practice primarily aims to develop the five pillars of the PERMA model as well as caring ethics and related values among pre-service and in-service teachers, and to increase teachers’ capabilities to deal with the psychosocial issue of cyberbullying and understand the nature of education in connection with happiness and pursuit of life goals. Strengthening Student's Practice of Mental Health First Aid "ALGEE" Action Plan This project aims at building a stronger linkage between model and practice by (1) gathering the clinical experiences of professionals (e.g. clinical psychologist & counsellor) to create a real-life casebook of mental health issues; (2) demonstrating and discussing such real-life cases in class which further enables students to apply the “ALGEE” Action Plan practically. Positive and Caring Campus @ Jockey Club Ti-I College The project aims at enriching teachers, students and parents' knowledge and deepen their understanding in mental health issues through taking the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course and other related workshops, as well as other activities at Jockey Club Ti-I College. The research aims at investigating if these course, workshops and activities indeed have enriched their mental health knowledge. Enhancing Students' Personal and Psychosocial Development with Self-learning Kit: A Positive Education Approach This project aims at developing a self-learning kit on personal and psychosocial development for students’ preparation of their Field Experience (FE) and internships. Four aspects in personal development are identified in particular which are emotional management, social relationships and communication, leadership, and self-understanding and self-esteem, according to the feedback received from internship providers, teachers and students. The learning kit will be designed taking into account the feedback collected from the collaborating partners who offer fieldwork experience placements and internship opportunities, enhancement of student learning outcomes of FE and internships, and adoption of the positive education approach (Norrish, Williams, O’Connor, & Robinson, 2013). Activities such as self-assessments, case studies, knowledge/skill enrichment exercises, reflections and mini-quizzes will be included in the kit for each aspect. Early Childhood Educators' Perceptions on the Emotional and Behavioral Problems of Young Children in Hong Kong The aim of the study is to examine early childhood eduactors' perceptions on the emotional and behavioral problems of young children in Hong Kong. Two hundred early childhood educators would be asked to complete the Problem behaviors of Young Children Questionnaire. The responses would be analyzed to provide information on the prevalent rates and the degree of perceived impact of the problem behaviors, and the degree of difficulty in handling such behaviors.
