Projects

Developing a Model of STEAM Professional Development Programme for Early Childhood Educators
This project aims to investigate early childhood teachers’ learning process and develop a model of STEAM professional development programmes, including building up the fundamental STEAM learning concepts, curriculum design, pedagogical strategies, and multiple resources for incorporating STEAM education for young children in local early childhood education settings. Research Aims: - Developing a STEAM professional development model for early years - Investigate early childhood teachers’ STEAM pedagogical content knowledge - Analyze early childhood teachers’ pedagogical design
Project Start Year: 2023, Principal Investigator(s): HU, Xinyun

Investigating scaffolding strategies in the early STEM learning process
This study aims to investigate young children’s STEM learning process. The main purposes are to 1) investigate teachers’ pedagogical strategies applied in STEM activities, and 2) examine children’s STEM learning process in context-specific classrooms.
Project Start Year: 2023, Principal Investigator(s): HU, Xinyun

Designing STEM Toolkits in Future Classroom Learning
With the rapid development of technology, Early Childhood (EC) educators have been urgently required to appropriately integrate various and cutting-edge digital technologies to support the diverse learning needs of students in Hong Kong. The Future Classroom of EdUHK offers an opportunity for educators to integrate innovative toolkits to explore students’ potential learning opportunities, embracing their design thinking and creativity. This study applies an exploratory case study approach to learn the ways of improving students’ learning by using digital technologies in the Future Classroom, and develop practical toolkits for EC educators.
Project Start Year: 2020, Principal Investigator(s): HU, Xinyun Annie 胡馨允

Exploring Nature Play in Early Childhood Teacher Education: A Pilot Study
The Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide (The Curriculum Council, 2017) has been fine-tuned this year to account for the launching of the Free Quality Kindergarten Education Scheme. A new learning area named “Nature and Living” has been added to the curriculum guide to support children’s exploration of nature. There is increasing need for early childhood education (ECE) teachers to prepare for integrating nature education into the curriculum. However, there is limited professional development opportunities for ECE teachers to learn how to involve the nature education in the curriculum. This project aims to develop innovative learning resources and approaches for supporting in-service teachers and explore the content and pedagogical knowledge in nature education.
Project Start Year: 2018, Principal Investigator(s): HU, Xinyun Annie 胡馨允

Empower early childhood educators’ multimodal learning experience
This project facilitated early childhood teachers to share exemplars of pedagogical design and the experience of ICT innovation in the preschool settings. The outcomes of this project included an interactive e-platform, which created and shared multiple ICT-related practice experience for local practitioners. In addition, the e-platform took active role to improve learner’s ICT skills and knowledge, and share multiple media resources.

Zippy's Friends Programme in Kindergarten in Hong Kong
Zippiy's Friends (ZF) is an international programme designed to promote young children's emotional and social competence. With sponsorship from Hong Kong Bank Foundation, in 2011 a total of 240 teachers from 120 kindergartens has been trained trained to run the programme and 17,000 young children and parents have been benefited from the programme. Based on our study on children particating in Zippy's Friends Project, we will publish a book to share our experience from Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai in 2011-12. This book will provide useful resources for students and teacher in Hong Kong.
Project Start Year: 2009, Principal Investigator(s): WONG, Mun Amanda 黃敏 (HU, Xinyun Annie 胡馨允 as Co-Investigator)

Developing a Blended Learning Approach for Teachers in Early Experience in Putonghua Module
The needs of qualified Putonghua kindergarten teachers are increasing in Hong Kong. However, few studies or projects have focused on preparing Putonghua teacher’s education for preprimary institutions. The results of a pre-survey in a course of Early Experience in Putonghua indicates some challenges that pre-service teachers have encountered, including a lack of confidence, insufficient Putonghua teaching, a lack of appropriate materials for young children. In order to deal with the challenges, this project specifically aims to design a blended learning approach to improve pre-service teachers’ self-learning in Putonghua classroom language and competence of teaching Putonghua in early childhood settings.
Project Start Year: 2009, Principal Investigator(s): HU, Xinyun Annie 胡馨允

Creating a Community of Practice with ICT: An Internet Based Initiative
The project aims to develop a website to demonstrate exemplary cases of integrated curriculum and exemplify the use of ICT in teaching and learning in preschools. The website will demonstrate the ways in which students can become active learners. The website will also facilitate student’s sharing and discussion by its communication board and encourage their communication with lecturer. Professionals from local and overseas (Australia, Taiwan, China, Canada) will share their views and practices of integrating ICT into the teaching and learning of their preschool curriculum through interviews, video recording and conferencing. Some examples of student’s assignment will be uploaded onto the platform for student’s reference in future cohorts.
Project Start Year: 2007, Principal Investigator(s): LEUNG Wai Man Vivienne, LAM Ho Cheong (HU Xinyun as Co-Investigator)

Educational Visits and Exchange with ECE Institutions in Mainland
Funding was granted by HKIEd Faculty Grant Committee to sponsor educational visits and Exchange with Early Childhood Education Institutions in Mainland China. Same as the arrangement in 2005-2006, different modes of education visits to China will be offered to a total of 253 students from different early childhood teacher education programmes with sponsorship from the HK Bank Foundation. It will take place during Christmas and Easter holidays in 2006-07. The visits will include workshops, visits to local preschools and culture visits. In addition to the education visits to China, it is proposed to invite our Mainland counterparts to visit the HKSAR, including two specialists in dance and/or music and a Professor in early childhood teacher education. A range of academic exchange activities would be organized that will be of benefits to the visitors, our in-service and pre-service students, children and staff of the HKIEd HSBC Early Childhood Learning Centre, staff members of the Department of ECE and the local early childhood field.

Developing an On-line Self-Access Framework to Facilitate Lecturers' Analysis of BEd (ECE)(Hons) Students' Academic Writing and Thinking Skills and to Enhance Students' Independent, Active, Engaged Learning
The project aims to identify the common 'genre' formats they use in their academic writing as well as the knowledge and cognitive process dimensions (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001) applied by students of the BEd(ECE)(Hons) programmes; to assess their needs for enhancing independent, active and engaged learning; to design and develop a framework for On-line Self-Access E-Learning that will enable students to enhance their own learning and to develop this as a model/template for Module lecturers to analyse these aspects of their students' academic writing in order to facilitate their thinking and academic writing skills.
Project Start Year: 2006, Principal Investigator(s): LIM Swee Eng, Audrey (HU Xinyun as Co-Investigator)

Using Multi-model Teaching and Learning Experiences to Enhance Early Childhood Education
The goal of this project is to promote effective teaching and learning through the use of a multi-modal approach (i.e. mix of face-to-face and E-learning strategies) in the department of ECE. This project will create a set of exemplary modules that utilize online and face-to face teaching in order to promote more effective learning for students. The project will focus on the use of new pedagogies (e.g. problem-based learning and online learning) in dynamic ways to ensure that students are able to engage with content in inquiry based, active learning and problem solving environments.
