A Forward Approach for Solving Linear Congruences
In this project, we will explore the possibility of using a forward approach for solving a system of linear congruences or problems that can be modelled by a system of simultaneous congruences. Although the Chinese Remainder Theorem can be used to deal with simultaneous congruences, the usual technique is to apply the Extended Euclidean algorithm and backward substitutions to determine the unknowns, which could be quite tedious and time-consuming when the number of equations involved is numerous. We expect an alternative forward approach will be more efficient for solving the unknowns. The related mathematical results will be explored and proved. Computer implementation of the new approach will also be conducted for testing its computational efficiency.

Identifying Mathematics Teachers’ Competency in Terms of Their Capacity on Looking at Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint
We identify an additional knowledge domain which was originally defined by Felix Klein in the last century. The knowledge might serve as an added condition of sufficiency for effective teaching, delivered by Mathematics teachers – the capability of looking at elementary Mathematics from an advanced standpoint (EMFAS). In this study, we attempt to investigate and identify both fresh and pre-service teachers’ knowledge by applying the technique of EMFAS into their ability by analyzing mathematically the dimensional exchanges on solving some specifically constructed problems or justifying various propositions in a written test. The term dimensional exchanges refers to the situations where knowledge evolves during mathematical interpretation and justification between dimensions such as concrete-to-abstract, particular-to-general, local-to-global (properties), etc. This study is a continuation of a small project done by the one of the Co-I’s in 2016-17. Invited participants have to show details of derivations in their responses in a prescribed written test on some specially designed item questions on how to deliver Mathematics knowledge to students at the elementary level with respect to the advanced knowledge they possess. We shall explain why EMFAS would be a new knowledge domain beyond the traditional pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and subject matter knowledge (SMK) between which the inter-relationship is not very apparent in the traditional construct of Mathematics knowledge domain (see for example Ball, et al 2005). The results may serve as an indicator to determine Mathematics teachers’ proficiency in applying the technique of EMFAS. It has been a general belief that both SMK and PCK are essential for effective teaching, and thus, under normal circumstance, leads to students’ effective learning. Proficiency of EMFAS provide a foundation to bridge SMK between advanced and elementary levels, This connection is not guaranteed during knowledge delivery by teachers who only possess sufficient PCK and SMK, but not proficiency of EMFAS. The previous study on this topic hinted a situation that EMFAS would be another additional knowledge domain in the component of Mathematics teachers’ professional competency. Unfortunately, there is no special training in this particular topic in the curriculum of Mathematics teacher education. We conclude it by suggesting a way out of the current situation in the curriculum of teacher education. It is our belief that subject knowledge guides pedagogy. While, capacity of looking at EMFAS is a very special type of subject knowledge that could play an important role in guiding pedagogy.

Dean's Research Fund: On Computing the Inverse of Vandermonde Matrix
The Vandermonde matrix has important applications in various areas such as polynomial interpolation, numerical analysis, signal processing, curve fitting, coding theory, statistics and control theory, etc. Since the last decade, the study of more new efficient approaches for computing the inverse of Vandermonde matrix or its generalized version (i.e. confluent Vandermonde matrix) has been an important research topic in many mathematics, engineering and sciences disciplines. Also, the study of its LU decomposition (i.e. expressing the matrix as a product of a lower triangular matrix and an upper triangular matrix) is equally important, since one can apply the latter to solve the associated system of linear equations of the problem concerned more effectively by applying backward and forward substitutions. On the other hand, the technique of decomposing a rational function into partial fraction expansion (PFE) is essential in the areas of Inverse Laplace Transform, linear differential equations, control theory, discrete mathematics and engineering mathematics, etc. In this project, we will develop a new efficient approach to compute the inverse of Vandermonde matrix and its LU decomposition, via the Heaviside’s cover-up technique to PFE. We will also explore the relationships between the elements of the Vandermonde matrix inverse and the associated PFE. Also, we will study the applications of this new approach in solving related problems in various areas, such as polynomial interpolation, summation of series, signal processing and coding theory, etc.

Further Development of Complete Teaching and Learning Materials for Mathematics Modules
The Department of Mathematics has noted that students have frequently expressed their concern about the difficulty of learning mathematics, and about the shortage of appropriate learning materials. These concerns have validity because of the differences in focus, depth and orientation between the standard university mathematics curriculum and a curriculum that would be appropriate for the education of primary/junior secondary mathematics teachers. Because of these differences, and the much smaller market for the latter, there is a serious lack of learning resources that would meet the needs of our students. For these reasons, mathematics teaching and learning resources have to be developed on a systematic basis, by combining the efforts of various colleagues teaching the modules, and to organise them into complete and coherent teaching and learning resources. These materials will facilitate student learning, provide bases for further studies, and will enhance students' learning of mathematics at the Institute.

Certificate of Merit - Quality Education Fund Outstanding Project Awards
Dr Leung Chi Keung Eddie and his colleagues have received the Certificate of Merit from the Quality Education Fund for their QEF team project “Promoting Problem-solving Practices among Teachers and Pupils in Primary Mathematics”. Problem solving is widely considered as an important aspect of mathematics. However, problem solving activities were not common in primary classroom before the implementation of this project, which was purposefully developed to meet this need. The project included intensive teacher professional development programme, development and implementation of classroom problem solving activities, and production of high-quality resources. The teachers of the ten participating primary schools reported that there was a gradual positive change in students’ attitude and their ability towards problem solving.
