Professional Profile

I am now teaching in the Department of Chinese Language Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong. I have been here since 1996. In between, from 2004 to 2009, I had taught in NIE, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. My specialism is Chinese Linguistics, specialized in Chinese paleography. However, apart from teaching Etymology, Phonology or Classical Chinese, I also teach a wide range of courses in language teaching and pedagogy related. I am now the programme leader of a master degree, Teaching Chinese as an International Language (MATCIL) http://www.ied.edu.hk/matcil/ .

Confucian Classics’ Inheritance and Transformation in Pre-Qin Dynasty (Part 1): Research on the Unearthed "Book of Documents"
《詩》、《書》、《禮》、《易》、《春秋》是儒家的經典。孔子曾整理,並用以教導學生。孔子整理典籍,述而不作,儒家這些經典被認為來源於更早的王官之學。這也是過去胡適先生强烈否認的,是“諸子不出於王官說”的濫觴。在疑古之風盛行的民初,這種看法如烈火燎原,迅速成為一種風氣。然而,隨著考古的發現,新材料的出土,讓我們有幸看見書籍在先秦時代的真實面貌。而比對漢代以後的傳世版本,我們對於古籍在先秦時期的流傳,有很多新的認識。

Curriculum Design and the Teaching of Classical Chinese Texts in Secondary Schools in Hong Kong
Through a general overview of the existing curricula, this project aims to provide suggestions and recommendations on the subject knowledge and competence structures of classical Chinese for local secondary schools, thereby proceeding to design and develop a feasible and efficient classical Chinese school-based curriculum and e-learning platform for frontline teachers to share their teaching materials, lesson plans and videos.

Teaching and Learning of Chinese Philology: Research on Evaluating Chinese Major Students' Knowledge and Competence of Classical Chinese (Phase I)
By evaluating the Chinese programs offered by local universities, together with those offered by Mainland China and Taiwan, this project aims to provide suggestions and recommendations on the competence structures of classical Chinese for Chinese major students to design and develop a feasible and efficient classical Chinese benchmark test. Building a Language Learning Autonomy Community
this project aims to set up a platform to link up all the self learning materials to stimulate and improve students’ self-learning motivation and capability in the momentum of “Blended learning” and “self-learning” which have always been emphasized in formal and non-formal language learning to support learner autonomy.

A Comprehensive Study of Yizhoush with Transmitted and Discoverd Texts
In this project, I aim to restudy Yi Zhoushu (《逸周書》) using the unearthed literature. These are to be supplemented by Shangshu and other ancient literature. By proofreading the excavated document, such as the bamboo slips of Tsinghua ‘Huangmen’ and the book ‘Huangmen Chapter of Yi Zhoushu’, I attempt to restore the original appearance of some ancient books and—according to the specific contents—the thought and language reflected by the articles to restudy the specific age of Yi Zhoushu.
