Pilot and Feasibility Studies of Applying Remote Assessment in Physical Education
In response to the social distancing measures in Hong Kong during pandemic, Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) of The Education University of Hong Kong, in collaboration with Hong Kong Physical Education Association, created a series of home exercise videos to encourage people to stay physically active at home. This was covered by numerous media in Hong Kong. However, without having any evaluating strategies, the effectiveness is in doubt. Consequently, the ultimate aim of the current project is to develop a low-cost, easy-to-use and attracting portable device which allows children to self-motivate to do exercise and self-administer assessments. Rope skipping can be done anytime and anywhere; therefore, this project will start with incorporating technology into this sport. The research team will cooperate with a technology company to invent a portable technological rope which incorporates heart rate monitor, pedometer and accelerometer to record exercise intensity, the number of steps/jumps taken and movement speed respectively. These can reflect energy expenditure and will be provided to the users instantly. Rewards, for example, badges, positive feedback and school ranking, will be offered as children seem to be keen to compete. As a result, the deliverables from the project will provide handy resources for teachers to guide the school children to do exercise at home and offer guidelines on how much exercise should be done with health benefits so as to promote an active lifestyle in the society.

EdU Touch Resource Pack - Phase 2
Rugby is one of the most popular sports worldwide and has received much scientific attention. Emphasis has been placed on the movement and physiological demands of rugby trainings and matches (Beaven, et al., 2014) and recovery strategies (Chow, et al., 2017; 2018). Playing recreational touch rugby has been evidenced to improve the cardiovascular autonomic control of sedentary subjects (Filliau, et al., 2014), which provide encouraging support to the aims of promoting MVPA60 in schools.

This project is 1) to produce an evidenced-based resource pack for teachers to teach touch rugby in secondary school and 2) to promote the use of evidence-based resource pack in touch rugby community including clubs and youth national team.

Promotion of STEM in PE to the Schools in Hong Kong
A research project together with a STEM competition to develop students’ sense of inquiry to enhance either sports performance or health promotion is proposed. A STEM-based approach in teaching PE with specific features will be proposed and identified. Data from both local schools for the STEM-based approach in teaching PE. Pedagogical cases on the approach will be developed with collaboration from local schools by July 2020.
In order to develop this STEM based alternate teaching strategy in PE, a research-based project could be conducted in 2020 to develop some pedagogical cases and illuminate the features of the approach. At the same time, interest of students from local primary and secondary schools as well as general public could be aroused by promoting a STEM competition for sports performance enhancement and health promotion in June 2021.

An Evaluation Study on the Implementation of the Physical Education Curriculum
The study was a competitive tendered research project initiated by the Education Bureau. The major research question of the study was “to what extent PE panel chairpersons and teachers understand the framework and key emphases of the central PE curriculum”. It was the territory-wide questionnaire survey of 402 primary and secondary PE teachers. . Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through close- and open- ended questions built in the questionnaire. SPSS, content analysis and constant comparison were adopted for analysing data of closed and open-ended questions. PE teachers showed understanding of the “healthy and active lifestyle” as the aim of their PE curriculum. They ranked “health and fitness” strand as the highest priority in their PE teaching. Each of them organised 5 sports teams and 6 PE related training courses/interest groups as well as a variety sports promotion programmes for developing students’ physical activity participation. 70% of them had formulated physical fitness activity policy and plans. However, the policy and plans had seldom made known to their stakeholders. The official Curriculum Guides were found effective in serving as references for supporting curriculum planning and development. The findings generated information on how PE teachers understood the PE curriculum in Hong Kong. Possible professional supports and measures for helping PE teachers to further promote students’ learning were suggested.

The Development of Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Novice Physical Education Teachers in Hong Kong Secondary Schools
This study investigates pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) development in four novice physical education (PE) teachers in Hong Kong secondary schools. Specifically, it is intended to explore how the novice teachers’ PCK evolves during their teaching and identifies a trigger for PCK development. The research uses communities of practice (CoP) (Wenger, 1998) as theoretical framework which serves as a mechanism for examining how the learning and teaching of PE occur in secondary schools. The framework also challenges the rethinking learning in schools by viewing learning as participation (Lave & Wenger, 1992). With the qualitative research employing multiple case studies design the narrative approach will be used to answer the following questions: (1) What knowledge do novice PE teachers have before they start their teaching profession? (2) What have shaped their knowledge before they start their teaching profession? (3) How does the teachers’ knowledge change during the teaching? (4) What contributes to their knowledge change during teaching? The four participants will be purposefully selected for their involvement and interest in implementing innovative model based instructions in their teaching. The data will be collected from the collection of lesson plans, videotaped lessons, written reflections and semi-structured interviews between March 2010 and January 2011. Analysis will be informed by theories of CoP (Wenger,1998) and an analytical framework adapted from Shulman (1986, 1987); Grossman (1990, 1995) and Turner-Bisset (1999, 2001), which focuse on six components of PCK, i.e. conception of teaching purposes, knowledge of curriculum, subject matter knowledge, knowledge of students, knowledge of pedagogy, and knowledge of self. The significance of the study is that different forms of PCK emerge over time. At the outset, the six elements of PCK are in a rather rudimentary and separate state of development. It may serve as a contribution and catalyst to guide teacher educators to “focus on what teachers ought to know and how they might learn it” (Schempp, et al., 1998, p.343). “Examination of the knowledge base underlying effective teaching and teacher education has the potential to contribute significantly to the improvement of PE” (Housner, Gomez, & Griffey, 1993, p.176). Elbaz (1981) also states, “the single factor which seems to have the greatest power to carry forward our understanding of the teachers’ role is the phenomenon of teachers’ knowledge” (p.45). In addition, according to Wenger (1998), learning is mediated through social participation. Sirna et al., (2008) elaborate that, through interactions, individuals engage in a ‘process of being active participants in the practices of social communities and construct identities in relation to these communities.’ (Wenger, 1998, p.4). Hence, CoP has been explored within the workplace context as a way to make sense of learning as social process participation (Billett, 2001). Wenger (1998) also points out that individuals may be peripheral rather than full members of a CoP, though over time, they may become more fully recognized. For novice teachers, their experiences of teaching PE in schools are those of peripheral participants and they actively work toward acceptance as full members of the PE teachers’ community of practice. Consequently, this study takes on a critical theoretical approach, which may unveil the issues of teaching as an art, science, or both in student teachers. Therefore, how to adapt the curriculum and instruction of the pre-service teacher education as well as professional development of PE teachers to this trend are worthy of an academic study.
